Islay Ferry Status Update

Calmac sent out the following information this afternoon:

Further to MV Isle of Arran being unable to berth in Port Ellen at 12:00hrs today, the vessel will return to Kennacraig where it will tie up for the rest of today.

The MV Hebridean Isles will now operate a delayed 13:00hrs sailing from Kennacraig to Port Askaig as a PASSENGER ONLY SERVICE. On completion of this service and due to the adverse weather forecast this evening, the 15:30hrs & 17:00hrs sailings from Islay today have been CANCELLED and the 18:00hrs sailing from Kennacraig tonight (Thursday 11th November) has been CANCELLED.

This in effect will mean that the 07:00hrs sailing from Islay tomorrow (Friday 12th November) will leave from PORT ASKAIG not Port Ellen, again this will be operating as a PASSENGER ONLY SERVICE.

Summary of remainder of todays sailings as follows :
Delayed 13:00hrs sailing - Kennacraig to Port Askaig PASSENGER ONLY SERVICE.
15:30hrs - Port Ellen - Kennacraig Cancelled
17:00hrs - Port Ellen - Kennacraig Cancelled
18:00hrs - Kennacraig - Port Ellen Cancelled

Islay Info Goes Mobile

A first post on a new Islay Blog? Well not entirely. My one and only Islay Blog can be found on and will remain there. So why this blog? Every now and then I have some snippets or other info I like to share that doesn't fit my regular blog, or sometimes I just have too much info about Islay to share on one blog. Another reason is that this blog loads fast and could well serve as an Islay blog for mobile users. Time will tell :-)

I'd like to spend this first post about the fact that I've setup a mobile site for Islay Info. Why? More and more people use smart phones with Android, or have iPhones and Blackberries, and they want to read about Islay as well without having to wait too long to load heavy sites and without having to pay for the use of a lot of bandwith. This is especially the case on Islay. The network coverage isn't comparable to other, more inhabited parts of Scotland, and 3G on your phone is seldom available. That means that bandwidth on your smart phone is very limited. And when you are on Islay and have a smart phone you would perhaps like to read about where to eat, get the latest Islay weather, download the Jura ferry timetable or have phone numbers available for the estates or in case of an emergency. That is one of the reasons why I built a mobile Islay Info site. A handy and fast online guide for when you are on Islay and perhaps just as useful for when you are planning your next trip from your mobile phone.

The new Islay Info mobile site can be reached on the url and later on you can reach the mobile site on a new url

I look forward to seeing you on the mobile website and if you have any suggestions please use the contact form on the mobile site or post a comment on this blog.
